A teak wood king size bed is the heaviest piece of furniture most families ever order. It stays in one room for decades. It also has to get through your bedroom door. Before you pay an advance anywhere, settle the mattress size, the grade of teak, and how the frame comes apart for delivery, because each of those is expensive to fix once the wood has been cut.
Teak Wood King Size Bed Dimensions for Indian Bedrooms
Start with the mattress, not the bed. In India a king mattress is 72 x 78 inches, which is 6 feet by 6.5 feet, though a few brands sell 72 x 75. Measure the one you own or plan to buy. The inner frame should be about half an inch larger on each side so the sheets tuck in without a fight.
The outer footprint is bigger. Side rails and a headboard add roughly 3 to 6 inches in width and 4 to 8 inches in length, depending on how thick the teak sections are, so a finished king frame usually lands near 76 x 84 inches.
Now the room. You want about 2 feet of walking space on both sides and at the foot, which means any room narrower than about 10.5 feet will feel cramped with a king, and in a 10 x 11 foot bedroom a queen at 60 x 78 inches is the better call even when the budget stretches to the bigger bed.
Then check the door. Most Indian bedroom doors are 3 feet wide and 7 feet tall, and a one-piece headboard over 6 feet wide will not turn through one on a narrow landing. Ask for a knock-down frame.
Which Teak Is Best for a King Size Bed?
"Teak" on a quote can mean several different timbers. Ask which one.
- Burma teak. Myanmar, old growth. Around 650 to 700 kg per cubic metre. The highest natural oil and insect resistance of the four. Tight grain, golden brown.
- CP or Nagpur teak. Central India. Around 630 to 680 kg per cubic metre. High resistance. Golden to mid brown with dark streaks.
- African or Ghana teak. Plantation grown. Around 550 to 650 kg per cubic metre. Moderate resistance. Wider grain and a lighter tone.
- Sheesham. North India. Around 770 to 850 kg per cubic metre. Moderate resistance, and it needs a sealed finish. Naturally dark, so it takes dark polish shades only.
Burma teak is scarce because Myanmar stopped exporting raw logs in 2014, so a lot of timber sold under that name in Indian markets is sawn stock of mixed origin, and you should treat the label with suspicion unless the seller can show you the planks before they are cut.
Whatever the grade, look at the edge of a plank. Heartwood is the golden brown core. Sapwood is the pale band near the bark. It carries little of the natural oil that makes a teak king size bed last, and borers find it first. It should not appear on any rail or leg. Ask for photos.
Sheesham is harder and heavier than teak and costs less, but it is the wrong pick for a carved headboard. Teak carves cleaner, and the carved edges finish smoother. Colour is the other limit. Sheesham is naturally dark, so it only takes dark shades of polish. Teak takes any shade, from a pale natural finish to deep walnut. If you want a light bed, the choice is already made. Teak Wood King Size Bed With Storage: Hydraulic or Drawers?
Storage beds fail at the box. Many shops build a teak outer frame and then line the storage box with MDF or commercial plywood, which swells and delaminates in a humid North Indian July. Ask for box panels in BWP plywood made to IS:710, the marine grade, or solid wood. Get it on the bill.
Woodstocks does not use MDF or particle board anywhere, including drawer bottoms and back panels, and a storage bed is where that rule earns its keep.
Hydraulic lift beds run on a pair of gas struts. They are rated in newtons. A king memory-foam mattress can weigh 30 to 40 kg and the platform adds more, so tell the maker your mattress weight and ask for struts rated to match it, because under-rated struts will not hold the lid up while you reach in and over-rated ones make it a struggle to close.
Drawers need floor space. A side drawer wants about 18 inches of clear floor to open fully. In a 10.5 foot room, that swallows your walkway. Box depth on either style is usually 10 to 12 inches.
How a Solid Wood King Size Bed Should Be Joined
A frame 6 feet wide puts heavy load on its side rails, and on a teak bed that load is carried by bolts rather than by a joint you can see. The rails are drawn tight to the headboard and the front board with steel bed bolts, two holes through the front board and two through the headboard, and on a storage bed those same fixings carry the box. Bolts are what let a frame this size come apart for the move and be pulled tight again years later if it ever works loose. What to avoid is screws driven into end grain, which never hold for long, and metal L-brackets on their own, which loosen faster still.
For the base, a wooden king size bed needs a centre rail running head to foot with at least one leg reaching the floor. Slats should sit no more than 3 inches apart, or use an 18 mm plywood base with ventilation holes so the mattress can breathe.
Moisture is the hidden problem. Timber for indoor furniture in India should be kiln-dried or air-seasoned to about 10 to 12 percent moisture content before it is cut, because wood that goes into a frame wet shrinks through its first winter, the joints open, and the bed starts to creak every time somebody turns over. Ask how it was seasoned.
Latest Teak Wood King Size Bed Designs
Low panel headboards, 36 to 42 inches from the floor, suit flats with 9.5 to 10 foot ceilings. Cane inlay headboards bring back the rattan look of older Indian bedrooms and breathe better against a wall than a padded panel. Fluted fronts, cut as vertical grooves, need tight-grained teak or the ribs chip.
Carved beds are a different job. Saharanpur has carried a wood-carving trade for over a century, and a deep floral or jaali headboard is cut by hand, chisel by chisel. Teak is the better wood for it. Ordering a Custom Teak Wood Bed
Custom orders go wrong on details nobody wrote down. Send the maker the mattress size in inches, the room length and width, the narrowest door or stair turn on the delivery route, the teak grade you are paying for, and the finish.
On finish, PU lacquer resists water rings and suits most homes. Melamine is cheaper and duller. A plain oil finish looks beautiful but needs regular re-oiling. Ask for a sample on the same wood. A teak wood king size bed is judged at its corners and its base, not in the showroom photo. Put the teak grade on the invoice before any money moves. FAQs
Is a teak veneer bed the same as a solid teak bed?
No. Teak veneer is a slice of teak about 0.5 mm thick glued over plywood or MDF. It looks the same on day one, but a deep scratch cannot be sanded out because there is almost nothing to sand, and the core underneath is not teak. Ask whether the headboard, rails and legs are all solid, since some beds mix the two.
How high should a teak wood king size bed be?
Most frames put the top of the side rail 12 to 16 inches off the floor. With a 6 to 8 inch mattress, the sleeping surface lands near 20 to 24 inches, roughly knee height for most adults. Older family members often find 22 to 25 inches easier to stand up from. Storage beds sit higher, so give the maker your mattress thickness.
Is teak termite-proof?
No wood is fully termite-proof. Teak heartwood contains natural compounds, tectoquinone among them, that repel termites better than most Indian timbers. If the house has had termites before, get the floor and the wall behind the bed treated, and keep the headboard about 2 inches off a damp outer wall so air can move behind it.
What height should bedside tables be for a king bed?
Keep the tabletop within about 2 inches of the mattress top. With a 22 inch sleeping surface, that means tables of 20 to 24 inches. A 6-foot-wide bed looks better with tables 18 to 24 inches wide. Order them with the bed so they come from the same teak batch and the colour matches.
Can I order a teak bed for a non-standard mattress?
Yes. A made-to-order frame can be built around any mattress, including extra-long ones of 84 inches for tall sleepers. Order the mattress first and build the frame to it, not the other way round, because a custom mattress costs more and takes longer to make than a standard 72 x 78 inch king.
